Good in theory, annoying limitations in practice
This is my first GPS, that I bought seven months ago. I use the eTrex 20 for cycling, geocoding photos and geocaching. I used an iPhone for these things before. I generally like the GPS - it has a good screen, that is often usable without the backlight, and the geocaching functionality is ok. Unfortunately, there are some problems that make daily use annoying:

* The GPS is slow to render maps. This is especially obvious during panning and zooming, which I ended up doing a lot in practice (since zooming out gives little detail, zooming in requires a lot of panning). Sometimes I have to wait seconds to view the full map.

* It does not have a USB 2.0 interface, which makes transferring maps to the GPS slow. New maps are often one or two gigabytes, transferring an updated map image often literally takes hours. Updating maps is something you have to schedule. Garmin's maps are not updated that often, but if you want to upgrade OSM maps monthly, beware!

*...

The Garmin mantra: "Give `em rubbish maps and they'll pay more to get good un's!"
I have given Garmin a quite a bit of money over the years, therefore I am entitled to lead my review with something negative. Yes, the build and the reliability of their handheld models (of all colours) keeps me coming back (this is my third different model), but why, why, why do they decide that the unit basemaps should always be so rubbish?

Turn on the machine and not only do you get a crude drawing of the major routes around about (in other words, NOT what is on the box cover!) but it can't even get the name of the nearby river right (The Ouse not The Swale)! No matter indicating where I might cross without getting wet! Like buying a new luxury car with a warped steering wheel and a sticky gearbox and being told items which works properly are extra!

(So Garmin do the right thing - give us a free decent map for the price (or ten quid more) and stop being so penny pinching. Also put the first set of batteries in the box too. I've bought a five pound clock...

Well worth upgrading to
My first GPS was the original eTrex and has been very good over the years. I upgraded to the eTrex 10 because I needed a second GPS and thought the extra sensitivity and memory would prove usueful. The first thing I liked was the easy to use toggle switch on the front of the eTrex 10 which makes the inputting of coordinates so much easier; the use of very stiff "enter" button with the old eTrex would often result in a tender thumb after a long session of inputting data. To judge the claims of improved sensitivity I went for a walk in a heavily wooded area with both my GPS units. Before entering the woods both GPS units were claiming to know my location within 3mt. As I entered the woods my eTrex's accuracy changed to 5 and then 8mt, the eTrex 10 stayed at 3mt. By the time I was well under cover the eTrex 10 was reading 5mt and 8mt when standing next to large tree trunks. By comparison the eTrex was reading 10 to 20mt. Generally the eTrex 10 appears to be 2 to 3 times more accurate...

A steep learning curve from the classic e-trex
I originally bought the classic yellow e-trex for geocaching , and after just over a year it broke , and I replaced it with the 10 just over two months ago.

At first I was bemused by all the screens , the scant instructions , and the leap in complexity from the older model . I did not find the etrex10 at all intuitive , or the garmin basecamp software (a free download)a useful interface between it and my computer .
A bit of persistence , a download of the relevant owners manual from garmins website , and a lot of button pressing later the screens started to make sense and I realised that I could configure them to exactly what I wanted . I had some initial difficulty with caches , but once I grasped that waypoints and geocaches are treated as two entirely different animals I was away !

Accuracy is improved over the older model , as is battery life (3 days on a pair of NiCads vs 1)and the GPS is a much neater shape . GPX cache files loaded onto the etrex10 by...

2 Stars is so wrong
The 2 star review is so wrong - the reviewer obviously did not check out first what he was actually buying.

The eTrex 30 is a very sophisticated piece of kit - incredibly quick to locate your position and very accurate (it can tell if you are on one side of a road or the other and the isosceles triangle icon on the screen not only shows your location but also the direction you are facing). The features and menu options are also very intuitive and the buttons and "toggle / joy-stick" are very easy to operate - you can do eveything with your thumb, even when wearing mits.
The features such as the "trip meter" are brilliant (even tells you how long to sunset) and loading routes to and from your computer is a doddle. It has a three dimensional compass that very few GPS have - which means it works even when you are standing still (this is the only difference from the slightly cheaper eTrex 20). The altimeter is also very accurate. Phone apps are no-way comparable to what...

Garmin Etrex 30
I have bought Garmin units for years, both in car and handheld units like this.
The new Etrex is a very nice unit. The display is better than the old Etrex, battery life is better and overall its smaller. The menu system is different and takes a few extra clicks to get to the screen you want, but overall it is a worthy upgrade from my Vista CX.
The only thing I don't like is that the joystick is now the other side of the screen, making left handed / left thumbed operation difficult. You either cover the screen when using the joystick or learn to use it in your right hand.

Now, all Garmins in-car units have superb mapping, far better than the competition. So, why are the base maps supplied in handheld units such utter rubbish? Unless you are happy walking looking at a blank screen, you are going have to dig deep in your pockets and buy some sort of mapping to install.

You have a choice. Birds Eye maps look a great idea, but the area you get for
